Focusing on First-Generation Students in College Admissions
To my fellow selective college admissions deans, I am asking for a mindset shift. We must stop being receivers of applications. We started in this work as admissions counselors, taught to counsel students to find the right path. Somewhere along the way to our seats at the top, we got complacent. We got comfortable. It didn’t happen overnight, but it happened. We stopped counseling and started receiving.

CEDRIC T. WINS
CEDRIC T. WINS has been named interim superintendent of Virginia Military Institute, the nation’s oldest state-funded military college. He is the first Black male leader of the college in its 181-year history. A retired Army Major General, Wins graduated from the school in 1985 with a bachelor’s in economics. He holds a master’s in management from the Florida Institute of Technology and a master’s in national security and strategic studies from the National War College.

RICHARD YAO has been named interim president at California State University Channel Islands (CSUCI). Currently CSUCI’s vice president for student affairs, Yao, a Chinese Filipino American, is the first person of color to lead the campus. A licensed clinical psychologist, Yao previously served as a senior lecturer in psychology at Nevada State College and was the first dean of students at Nevada State.

SIQI ZHENG
SIQI ZHENG has been appointed faculty director of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) Center for Real Estate. The Samuel Tak Lee Professor of Real Estate Development and Entrepreneurship at MIT, Zheng was previously the director of the Hang Lung Center for Real Estate at Tsinghua University in China, where she earned her Ph.D. in urban development and real estate. She did post-doc research at the Graduate School of Design at Harvard University.
