EXCELENCIA IN EDUCATION, an education think tank in Washington, D.C., has received a $1.49 MILLION grant from the Wal-Mart Foundation for the organization’s new national initiative, Growing What Works. The program is designed to increase the higher education success rate of Hispanic students in the United States.
HALIFAX COMMUNITY COLLEGE (N.C.) has received a $600,000 grant from the U.S. Department of Education’s Office of Secondary Education’s Predominantly Black Institutions Program. The funds will be used to begin the “Freedom to Learn Initiative,” which will work to improve the retention and graduation rates of HCC’s Black male students.
MIAMI DADE COLLEGE (Fla.) has been awarded an $11 MILLION gift from the Mitchell Wolfson Sr. Foundation to remedy the region’s nursing shortage.
MOREHOUSE SCHOOL OF MEDICINE (Ga.) has received a $100,000 gift from The Rich Foundation to expand and renovate the Gross Dissection Laboratory and the Multidisciplinary Teaching Laboratories at the school, which will accommodate a larger medical student class.
TRINE UNIVERSITY (Ind.) has received a $1.5 MILLION gift from Tri- State College alumnus Larry Reiners and his wife, Judy, for the Department of Civil Engineering.
The UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA, LOS ANGELES, has been awarded a $4 MILLION grant from the U.S. Department of Education’s Institute of Education Sciences for UCLA’s Graduate School of Education & Information Studies and the Department of Psychology. The funds will support an interdisciplinary doctoral training program to produce world-class education researchers.
