Harvard’s Benjamin Sachs to head Tulane’s med school

NEW
ORLEANS
A Harvard Medical
School professor will become head
of Tulane University School of Medicine on Nov. 1, Tulane announced Wednesday.

In addition to teaching at Harvard, Benjamin P. Sachs is
chair of obstetrics and gynecology at Beth
Israel Deaconess
Medical Center.

His success in creating research teams is one reason he was
chosen, Tulane President Scott Cowen said.

Sachs created the team that discovered a possible cause of
pre-eclampsia dangerously high blood pressure that kills hundreds of pregnant
women each year and could lead to a simple urine test to predict which women
are likely to develop it.

Sachs said he was attracted to New
Orleans by Tulane’s reputation and the chance to make
a difference in the post-Katrina city.

“Tulane has a long history as a leader in medical
education, research and patient care and it will be a real privilege to help
lead the recovery,” Sachs said.
