About two dozen monks and their rescue dog, Aloka, embarked on the 2,300-mile journey to promote unity and compassion across a divided nation.

In a statement released after their stay at Virginia State, the monks expressed gratitude for the university's hospitality.

"It is through the warm embrace of places like Virginia State University that this journey is sustained and nourished," the statement read. "You have given us not just a place to rest, but a place to feel welcomed and valued."

The monks also extended their thanks to every host along the route since the journey began. "Each location has been a sanctuary for our spirits, and your kindness stays with us in every step we take," the statement said.

The monks' live location and route can be tracked online through the Walk for Peace website, which also provides daily updates on the pilgrimage's progress.
