Tylik McMillan
McMillan, a nationally recognized civil rights activist and strategist, brings a record of grassroots organizing and movement building to the role. He helped organize the 2020 Commitment March on Washington and the 2021 March On for Voting Rights, events that drew hundreds of thousands to the nation's capital in support of racial justice, police reform, and voting rights protections. He is a former student leader of National Action Network, the civil rights organization founded by the Reverend Al Sharpton.
"At this pivotal moment in time, it is crucial that our community continues building power, strengthening civic engagement, and ensuring young people know their voices matter," McMillan said.
Dominik Whitehead, the NAACP's Chief of Field, Membership Growth and Unit Sustainability, praised McMillan's commitment to inspiring youth civic engagement while also acknowledging interim director Derrick Lewis for sustaining the division during the transition period.
"Tylik will build upon that work," Whitehead said. "We're confident his vision and dedication to the movement will propel our mission forward at this critical moment for our nation."
McMillan has received recognition from former Vice President Kamala Harris and the Biden-Harris White House. His honors include the United States Black Chambers, Inc. 50 Under 40, Bloomberg 50 One to Watch, and the National Urban League Young Professionals National Trailblazer award.
He is featured in The Student Debt Crisis: America's Moral Urgency, the book written by Dr. Jamal Watson that traces the student debt crisis and he appeared on a webinar organized by The EDU Ledger.
The NAACP, founded in 1909, operates a nationwide network of members focused on securing civil rights through advocacy, litigation, and grassroots activism.
