“The things I want to know are in books; my best friend is the man who’ll get me a book I ain’t read.”

Abraham Lincoln

Abe’s grammar notwithstanding, his is a sentiment shared by many. Gift-giving season is upon us, and the only thing better than getting a book just might be giving one. If some of the family, friends and colleagues on your list are educators and scholars, the choice of a gift is simple. They will want more books. To help make the selection easier, we have searched DiverseBooks’ offerings for suggestions that reflect many cultures and interests, including some Christmas tales.

In the spirit of the season, topping our list are three titles from University of Mississippi Press. Each of them gathers stories and essays from native writers, famous and lesser known, to weave a tapestry about warm winter holidays in the South.

Christmas Stories from Mississippi, edited by Judy H. Tucker, $27, (List price: $30), October 2001, ISBN: 9781578063819, pp. 216.
