Obama Calls on Colleges To Curtail Costs

WASHINGTON, D.C.

President Barack Obama on Tuesday outlined a multi-prong education strategy for America that includes providing all Americans with “a quality higher education — whether it’s college or technical training.”

“Never has a college degree been more important. And never has it been more expensive. At a time when so many of our families are bearing enormous economic burdens, the rising cost of tuition threatens to shatter dreams,” he said.

Obama’s plan boosts Pell Grant spending, simplifies the federal financial aid application and provides a tax credit for students from working families.

“This is how we will help meet our responsibility as a nation to open the doors of college to every American. But it will also be the responsibility of colleges and universities to control spiraling costs,” Obama added.
