AUBURN HILLS Mich.

A South Lyon man accidentally shot and killed a fraternity brother at a party while playing with a gun, police said.

Police charged Marcus Jun-Mon Yu in the death of Karl Joseph Hansen, 21, of Pinckney, a fellow engineering student at Kettering University in Flint and fellow member of the Pi Kappa Alpha fraternity.

“This is a terrible tragedy between two close friends, college classmates,” Auburn Hills police Lt. James Manning said.

Hansen, who was asleep at the time Saturday, died of a gunshot wound to the head, police told The Detroit News, Detroit Free Press, The Oakland Press and the Livingston County Daily Press & Argus.

The men were close friends and families of both have requested privacy.

According to police, the gun’s owner another fraternity brother was sleeping and didn’t know Yu had the weapon.
