Adelphi University (N.Y.) has received an $8.5 million gift from Carol A. Ammon, founder and chairman of Endo Pharmaceuticals and a 1979 graduate of the university. The gift will be used to establish a professorship in childhood education and endow scholarships for education students.
California State University-Fullerton has received a $4.2 million donation from Dan Black, president of ProThera, a vitamin and nutritional supplement manufacturer. The gift will provide scholarships for students in CSU-Fullerton’s College of Natural Sciences and Mathematics.
Colgate University (N.Y.) has received a $10 million donation from an anonymous alumni, the largest single anonymous gift in the school’s history. The majority of the gift, $8.5 million, will be used to fund maintenance and operations activities. The remainder will go towards other campus projects.
Hartnell College (Calif.) has received a $400,000 grant from NASA to enhance the college’s engineering program and to better serve Latino and under-represented students. The grant will be used to update Hartnell’s introductory engineering curriculum, develop curriculum for new courses and expand other engineering offerings.
The National Urban League has received a two-year $20 million grant from the U.S. Department of Labor to extend the Urban Youth Empowerment Program, which provides Black youth with job training, job placement and educational skills. The extension will allow the League to expand those services to residents of Gulf Coast communities affected by hurricanes Katrina and Rita.
Purdue University (Ind.) has received a $1 million donation from alums Bob and Joyce Miles to help support the College of Consumer and Family Science’s Center for Families. Bob Miles is a 1963 graduate of the university. Joyce Miles graduated in 1965.
The Raritan Valley Community College (N.J.) Planetarium has received a $50,000 grant from NASA for a project that helps local science teachers learn how to teach astronomy. The two-year IDEAS (Initiative to Develop Education through Astronomy and Space Science) grant lets teachers attend a weeklong summer institute at the college.
