Report: First-generation Black Freshmen Drop in Four-Year Colleges
The number of first-generation Black students entering four-year colleges dropped by almost two-thirds between 1971 and 2005, according to new data collected by the Cooperative Institutional Research Program at the University of California, Los Angeles.

BOSTON Gov. Deval Patrick called for an eight-year overhaul of public education last week, seeking to transform pre-kindergarten through university learning with a proposal that also would make the state’s two-year community colleges free for all high-school graduates.

Just the Stats: Smaller Institutions Recognized For Bachelor’s Degree Production
Last week, Diverse released its 2007 report on the Top 100 Undergraduate Degree Producers. Because our focus is on quantity (we leave it to market forces, government agencies and accreditation bodies to assure quality), we recognize that our listings tend to favor larger institutions. This year, we introduce into our analysis several views that accommodate smaller institutions. But before getting to those trends and views, we should describe the data source and methods used to assemble the Top 100 lists.

NISOD Conference Attracts Record Number of Attendees
AUSTIN, Texas A record 2,300 attendees from community colleges across the nation descended on Austin, Texas, last week for the 29th annual International Conference on Teaching and Leadership Excellence, held May 20-23. Hosted by the Community College Leadership Program at the University of Texas-Austin through its National Institute for Staff & Organizational Development (NISOD) outreach arm, the conference touched on a broad range of issues relating to enriching and enhancing two-year college leadership and faculty instruction.
