As the school’s associate vice chancellor and chief of police, Washington holds a bachelor’s degree in behavioral science from the University of Louisiana Lafayette and a master’s degree in criminal justice from Grambling State University in Louisiana.

She is the school’s first female athletic director and the first Black woman to lead a Southeastern Conference (SEC) athletics department. Most recently deputy director and senior woman administrator of the athletics program, Lee holds a bachelor’s in human and organizational development, a master’s in counseling and a Ph.D. in higher education administration — all from Vanderbilt.

According to the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence, 21% of college students experienced domestic violence by a current partner, and 32% of college students experienced domestic violence by a previous partner. The numbers are more likely higher because some women do not feel comfortable sharing their abuse with University officials for fear of retaliation. So what can colleges and universities do to create the kind of campus environment that allows women to seek help from an abuser?
