She is currently serving as interim senior associate dean for faculty affairs in the College of Humanities and Sciences at Virginia Commonwealth University. Bassard holds a bachelor’s degree from Wake Forest University, a master’s degree from Virginia Commonwealth University and a Ph.D. from Rutgers University.

ROLAND MITCHELL has been appointed dean of the College of Human Sciences and Education at Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge, where he has currently been serving as interim dean. Mitchell holds a bachelor’s degree in history from Fisk University in Nashville, a master’s degree in higher education from Vanderbilt University and a Ph.D. in educational research from the University of Alabama.

MALIK WASHINGTON has been appointed director of Penn Violence Prevention at the University of Pennsylvania, where he has currently been serving the role as interim director. Washington holds a bachelor’s degree in communications, Africana studies and political science from Howard University.

TARA WILLIAMS has been named dean of the Honors college at the University of Alabama. She is currently a professor of English and associate dean at Oregon State University. Williams holds a bachelor’s degree in English from the University of Florida as well as a master’s degree and Ph.D. from Rutgers University.

ALTHA STEWART has been named senior associate dean for community health and engagement for the College of Medicine at the University of Tennessee Health Science Center. Formerly the first Black president of the American Psychiatric Association, Stewart currently serves as an associate professor of psychiatry. She holds a medical degree from Temple University Medical School.

LISA STARK has been appointed assistant vice president for communications and media at American University in Washington, D.C. Previously a broadcast correspondent for Education Week and PBS NewsHour, Stark holds a bachelor’s degree in political science from the University of California, Berkeley.

She currently serves as dean of the School of Business and School of Advanced Technology at Southwestern Michigan College. Young holds a bachelor’s degree in accounting from Manchester University, a master’s degree in business administration from Bethel University and a Ph.D. in higher education administration and leadership from Andrews University.

ALEXANDRA HANLON has been named director of the Center for Biostatistics and Health Data Science at the Virginia Tech Carilion Health Sciences Campus in Roanoke. She was previously a research professor at the University of Pennsylvania. Hanlon holds a bachelor’s degree in mathematical statistics from the Rochester Institute of Technology, a master’s degree in statistics from the University of California, Irvine and a Ph.D. in statistics from Temple University.

CALVIN R. WALKER has been named executive vice chancellor and director of agriculture, research and extension center special projects at the Southern University Agricultural Research and Extension Center. Currently a professor of animal science at Southern University A&M College, he holds a bachelor’s degree in animal science from Louisiana Tech University as well as a master’s degree and a Ph.D. in animal science from Oregon State University.

SHEILA SMITH MCKOY has been appointed vice provost and vice president for academic affairs at Holy Names University in Oakland, California. McKoy has most recently been serving as chair of the department of English at Kennesaw State University in Georgia. She holds a bachelor’s degree from North Carolina State University, a master’s degree from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, and a Ph.D. from Duke University.

ADRIENNE MORGAN has been named associate vice president for the University of Rochester School of Medicine and Dentistry’s office of equity and inclusion. Currently the school’s medical center dean, she holds a bachelor’s in political science from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, a master’s in cross-disciplinary professional studies from the Rochester Institute of Technology and a Ph.D. in higher education from the Warner Graduate School of Education and Human Development.

The University of California system was hit with a civil rights lawsuit last week over required standardized testing. The plaintiffs – four students, six nonprofits and the Compton Unified School District – accused University of California regents of knowingly putting student of color and students with disabilities at a disadvantage by requiring the SAT or ACT from applicants.

University of Arizona Professor Settles Gender Discrimination Lawsuit

A University of Arizona (UA) professor settled a $20 million gender discrimination lawsuit against the Arizona Board of Regents, the Associated Press reported.
