Previously, he was associate professor of English and of law and coordinator of the independent major at Elon University. Hairston received a bachelor’s degree from Wake Forest University, a master’s degree and Ph.D. from the University of Virginia and a JD from the University of North Carolina.

RONALD S. HARICHANDRAN

RONALD S. HARICHANDRAN has been named vice provost for research at the University of New Haven. Most recently, he served as dean of New Haven’s Tagliatela College of Engineering. Harichandran earned a bachelor’s degree in civil engineering from the University of Canterbury in New Zealand and a master’s degree and Ph.D. in civil engineering from Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

CLAIRE GARCIA has been named dean of the faculty at Colorado College. Most recently, she served as a professor of English at the college. Garcia earned a bachelor’s degree in philosophy and literature from Bennington College and a Ph.D. in English and American literature from the University of Denver.

AKITO KAWAHARA has been appointed a University of Florida Research Foundation professor at the University of Florida. Most recently, he served as associate professor and curator at the McGuire Center for Lepidoptera and Biodiversity at the Florida Museum of Natural History. Kawahara earned a bachelor’s degree from Cornell University and a Ph.D. from the University of Maryland.

TANDRA TAYLOR| has been appointed diversity and inclusion coordinator at Lewis and Clark Community College. Taylor received a bachelor’s degree from Spelman College, a master’s degree from Georgia State University, a master’s degree from Saint Louis University and is currently pursuing a Ph.D. at Saint Louis University.

SANJAY RAMAN has been named dean of the College of Engineering at the University of Massachusetts Amherst. Previously, he served as associate vice president for Virginia Tech National Capital Region and professor at Virginia Tech. Raman earned a bachelor’s degree from Georgia Institute of Technology and a master’s degree and Ph.D. from the University of Michigan.

KEVIN MELENDREZ has been named a member on the NCAA Division I Progress-Toward-Degree Waivers Committee. He currently serves as associate professor and department head for the Accounting and Information Systems Department at New Mexico State University. Melendrez earned a bachelor’s degree from New Mexico State University and a master’s degree and Ph.D. from the University of Arizona.

DEUS BAZIRA has been appointed co-director of the Center for Global Health Practice and Impact at Georgetown University Medical Center. Previously, he served as founding director for the Center for International Health, Education and Biosecurity at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County. Bazira received a master’s degree from the University of Cape Town and a Ph.D. from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

SUSAN HOWARTH has been named executive vice president for strategy, operations and finance at Western Kentucky University. Previously, she was director of decision support at the University of Louisville. Howarth earned a bachelor’s degree in business administration and finance from the University of Louisville and a master’s degree in finance from Northern Illinois University.

SAÚL JIMÉNEZ-SANDOVAL has been appointed provost and vice president for academic affairs at Fresno State University. He currently serves as dean of the College of Arts and Humanities at the university. Jiménez-Sandoval received a double bachelor’s degree in history and Spanish, a Ph.D. in Spanish and Portuguese from the University of California, Irvine and professional certificates in critical theory from Cornell University.

Widely recognized as a towering figure in the field of medicine, a brilliant surgeon and educator who broke color barriers while reaching the pinnacle of his profession, Dr. LaSalle D. Leffall Jr., died on May 25 in Washington, D.C. at age 89.
