New Bennett President Suzanne Walsh Optimistic Amid Crisis

Bennett College, one of only two remaining historically Black colleges for women, has been here before. At the start of a new academic year, it’s a precarious place. Cliches such as “the odds were against her” don’t come close to telling Tyleen Caffrey’s story. The “odds” included physical abuse as a child, placement with relatives and in foster care, back to an abusive home and back again to foster care. California Institute of the Arts has named VERONICA ALVAREZ the new director of the CalArts Community Arts Partnership. Most recently, Alvarez served as director of school and teacher programs at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art. Alvarez holds a bachelor’s degree in liberal studies and master’s degree in history from California State University, Northridge. She received her doctorate through Loyola Marymount University’s educational leadership for social justice program.

Valentine earned a bachelor’s through Howard University’s physician assistant program, a master’s in adult education from Howard, and a doctorate in education from Virginia Tech University.

ANDREA D. JACKSON has been appointed dean of the Howard University College of Dentistry. She has been serving in the role on an interim basis since July 2018. Jackson completed both her bachelor’s in zoology and doctor of dental surgery degree at Howard University. Jackson has held a number of positions of increasing responsibility throughout her 40-plus years of service at Howard.
