JESSICA T. DECUIR-GUNBY has been appointed chair of the department of teacher education and learning sciences in the College of Education at North Carolina State University. A professor of educational psychology and director of graduate programs, DeCuir-Gunby holds a bachelor’s in psychology and Spanish from Louisiana State University. DeCuir-Gunby also earned a master’s degree and a Ph.D. in educational psychology from the University of Georgia.

TAMARA BUTLER has been named executive director of the Avery Research Center for African American History and Culture at the College of Charleston. A faculty member of the English department and the African American and African studies program at Michigan State University, Butler earned her bachelor’s degree from Xavier University of New Orleans. She holds a master’s degree in African American and African studies and a doctorate in multicultural and equity studies in education from Ohio State University.

NERGIS MAVALVALA has been named the new dean of the School of Science at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. She is the first woman to hold the position. The Curtis and Kathleen Marble Professor of Astrophysics at MIT, Mavalvala holds a bachelor’s in physics and astronomy from Wellesley College and a Ph.D. in physics from MIT.

JOSEF SORETT has been appointed chair of the department of religion at Columbia University in New York City. Additionally, he was promoted to full professor in both religion and African American and African diaspora studies. Also, the director of the Center on African-American Religion, Sexual Politics and Social Justice, Sorett holds a bachelor’s from Oral Roberts University, a master of divinity from Boston University and a Ph.D. in African American studies from Harvard University.
