She holds a bachelor’s degree in communications from Bethune-Cookman University, a master’s degree in communications from the University of Florida and is currently a doctoral candidate in education at the University of Massachusetts Amherst.

HOWARD O. GIBSON has been named the vice president of the division of academic affairs at Wiley College in Marshall, Texas. The former interim president of Arkansas Baptist College in Little Rock, Gibson holds a bachelor’s degree in accounting, a master’s degree in business administration and a Ph.D. in urban higher education — all from Jackson State University in Mississippi.

MARY-ANN IBEZIAKO has been appointed assistant vice president for utilities at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University. Most recently director of engineering and energy at the University of Maryland, College Park, Ibeziako holds a bachelor’s and master’s degree in mechanical engineering from Cleveland State University and a master’s in business administration from Case Western Reserve University.

AUGUST WASHINGTON has been appointed senior associate vice chancellor for public safety and special initiatives at Vanderbilt University. As the school’s associate vice chancellor and chief of police, Washington holds a bachelor’s degree in behavioral science from the University of Louisiana Lafayette and a master’s degree in criminal justice from Grambling State University in Louisiana.

MARIA RAMIREZ has been named assistant director of faculty development and diversity at the Steinhardt School of Culture, Education and Human Development at New York University. Previously a senior student advisor at NYU and coordinator of pre-college programs at Stevens Institute of Technology in New Jersey, Ramirez holds a bachelor’s degree in history from Misericordia University in Pennsylvania as well as a master’s degree in higher education and student affairs at New York University.

Currently president of Minnesota’s College of Saint Benedict, Hinton holds a bachelor’s degree in psychology from Williams College, a master’s degree in clinical child psychology from the University of Kansas and a Ph.D. in religion and religious education from Fordham University.

Currently interim director of the University of Southern Mississippi’s School of Management and the Alvin Williams Endowed Chair of Minority Entrepreneurship, Gibbs holds a bachelor’s from Grambling State University, a master’s in business administration from Winona State University and a Ph.D. in business administration from Jackson State University.

S. DAVID WU has been named president of the City University of New York’s Baruch College. He is the first Asian American leader of a CUNY college. Currently provost and executive vice president at George Mason University, Wu holds a bachelor’s from Tunghai University in Taiwan as well as a master’s and a Ph.D. in industrial engineering from Pennsylvania State University.

ALLISON VORDERSTRASSE has been appointed dean of the University of Massachusetts’s Amherst College of Nursing. Currently a faculty member and director of the Florence S. Downs Ph.D. Program in Nursing Research and Theory Development at New York University (NYU) Rory Meyers College of Nursing, Vorderstrasse holds a bachelor’s in nursing from Mount Saint Mary College as well as a master’s and Ph.D. in nursing from Yale University School of Nursing.

CANDICE STOREY LEE has been appointed interim athletic director at Vanderbilt University. She is the school’s first female athletic director and the first Black woman to lead a Southeastern Conference (SEC) athletics department. Most recently deputy director and senior woman administrator of the athletics program, Lee holds a bachelor’s in human and organizational development, a master’s in counseling and a Ph.D. in higher education administration — all from Vanderbilt.

Removing the Blindfold of Domestic Violence Against Women on College Campuses

According to the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence, 21% of college students experienced domestic violence by a current partner, and 32% of college students experienced domestic violence by a previous partner. The numbers are more likely higher because some women do not feel comfortable sharing their abuse with University officials for fear of retaliation. So what can colleges and universities do to create the kind of campus environment that allows women to seek help from an abuser?
