Knowing the Real Score: Football vs. Mississippi Education
In fall 1993, while discussing a program for Sunday morning service in our church in Oxford, Miss., a committee member, after looking at her calendar, stated that Sunday would not be a good day for the program because Ole Miss was playing a home football game that weekend. Little did I know at that time how prophetic that statement was. Football is a religion in Mississippi.

HAMPTON, Va. Hampton University officials have hired renowned attorney Johnnie Cochran and two Texas lawyers to consider taking legal action against the city of Lubbock, Texas, for the wrongful arrest and detainment of the Hampton women’s basketball coach, her husband, and an assistant coach.

Nike, HBCUs strike deal – Historically Black Colleges and Universities
WASHINGTON The Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) and sporting goods giant Nike announced last month, that they have signed a historic, three-year agreement that will not only provide footwear and apparel for conference teams, but also will include summer internships for students at Nike headquarters.

Being honest about and to athletes
Having raised three children (a daughter and two sons) who are currently Division I student athletes (basketball), having been involved in sports practically all of my life, and having worked as an educator for the past twenty-five years, I have been intimately involved in the counseling and advising of student athletes and their parents — particularly African American students. I also have worked closely with coaches and athletic administrators at several institutions.

Sports provided the focus of President Bill Clinton’s second town hall meeting on race relations in America. Clinton and leading collegiate and professional sports figures participated in a lively meeting and discussion, which was held at the University of Houston on April 14, 1998. The televised forum was entitled, “Race & Sports; Running in Place?”
