BALTIMORE
Dr. Stanley F. Battle, president of Coppin State University, has been appointed chancellor of North Carolina A&T State University.
Battle, 55, will take office July 1, 2007, succeeding Dr. Lloyd “Vic” Hackley, who has served as interim chancellor since Dr. James Renick stepped down in June to join the American Council on Education as senior vice president for programs and research.
“The chance to serve as chancellor of North Carolina A&T is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity,” said Battle. “However, this was a very difficult decision. My wife, Judy, and I love Coppin State University very much. We will continue to support the institution both spiritually and financially. I am extremely grateful for the wonderful years I’ve spent at Coppin and would like to thank everyone for their tremendous support during my presidency.”
Battle joined Coppin State in 2003, and focused the institution on a three-point plan of academic excellence, facilities improvement and external relations. The campus attained university status in 2004, and state support rose by more than 50 percent in the 2005-2006 fiscal year, according to a university press release. Coppin also became the first completely wireless campus in the University System of Maryland.
System Chancellor William E. Kirwan expressed his appreciation of Battle’s work.
“Thanks to President Battle’s dedication to broadening options for students of all ages, Coppin has become a national model in delivering education and advancing opportunities in an urban corridor affected by poverty and crime,” said Kirwan. “I wish him much success in his position at North Carolina A&T.”
