Florida A&M University recently has received $3.27 million in grants, including: $1.77 million from Ford Motor Co. for student scholarships and $1.5 million from Eli Lilly and Co. to increase the company’s pool of African American interns and professional employees.

The University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey’s Robert Wood Johnson Medical School has received $2 million from Bern and Mary Gallagher to establish an endowed professorship in developmental biology at the New Brunswick campus of the Child Health Institute of New Jersey.

Xavier University has been awarded a five-year, $1.95 million grant from the Kresge Foundation and the Southern Education Foundation to enhance the fund-raising capability of historically Black colleges and universities. The money will be used to build a more effective gift and alumni program as part of a five-year capital campaign to raise $75 million.

Arkansas State University and the University of Arkansas together received a $1 million grant from the Economic Development of Arkansas Fund Commission to help development in the impoverished Delta region. The schools plan to set up small-business development services and aid with international marketing of Delta products.

The University of Georgia received a $770,000 grant from the Goizueta Foundation to train childcare workers to help increase their numbers in parts of the state where the supply of experienced daycare employees is limited.

Howard University has received $500,000 from A. Barry Rand, chairman and chief executive officer of Avis Rent A Car Inc., to establish a scholarship fund for its school of education. Helen Matthews Rand Scholars will receive full tuition, partial room and board funding and a laptop computer for a maximum of two years to students pursuing degrees in teacher education. Students must make a two-year commitment to teaching in an urban environment directly upon completion of their degree.
