Pennsylvania Announces a New Wave of Funding to Target Hunger on Campus

Pennsylvania recently announced $1 million in new funding to address food insecurity at 30 colleges and private licensed schools across the Commonwealth. This latest round of PA Hunger-Free Campus grants marks the third consecutive year of investment in the program, which has now reached 92 postsecondary institutions since its inception in 2023.Pantry 62e1558a69c27

The grants are designed to combat what Pennsylvania Secretary of Education Dr. Carrie Rowe describes as an "invisible affliction" that disrupts learning and student retention. Unlike previous funding cycles that focused heavily on establishing basic pantry services, this year’s awardees are implementing more integrated solutions. Planned initiatives include the creation of meal-sharing programs, the alignment of campus dining plans with SNAP eligibility requirements, and the distribution of grocery gift cards for students remaining on campus during academic breaks, according to a March 3 news release

Pennsylvania’s Hunger-Free initiative aims to bake student-success resources directly into campus infrastructure. The grants serve as a near-term intervention within the broader PA EmpowerU framework — a state initiative that treats food access, housing security, and mental health as essential components of academic success. Advocates note that the focus on basic needs mirrors broader national discussions on leadership and institutional integrity

By embedding these resources directly into the campus infrastructure, officials hope to destigmatize food assistance and ensure that Pennsylvania's diverse student body —  from community college learners to those at major research universities — can focus on their credentials rather than their next meal.
