Brandeis University (Mass.) received a $25 million donation from Carl J. and Ruth Shapiro for a new 175,000-square-foot science center. The $154 million facility will be named the Carl J. Shapiro Science Center. The donation matches the largest in school history, also given by the Shapiro family for the Carl and Ruth Shapiro Campus Center.
Canisius College (N.Y.) received a $50,000 grant from the UPS Foundation, the charitable arm of UPS, for the college’s Urban Leadership Learning Community program. The grant will provide scholarships for students who participate in the program. The award was recommended by Calvin Darden, a retired senior vice president of UPS and 1972 Canisius alumnus.
Casper College (Wyo.) T-Bird Booster Club scholarship fund received an anonymous $25,000 gift to help support the college’s basketball and volleyball programs. The gift, which will be matched by state funds, is the largest single gift ever received on behalf of the athletic department.
The College for Creative Studies (Mich.) received a $50 million gift from the estate of Josephine Ford, the only granddaughter of Ford Motor Co. founder Henry Ford. The college will use the gift to help increase financial aid for students and increase the number of full-time faculty. CCS’s transportations design education program is among the most respected in the automotive industry.
Coastline Community College (Calif.) received a $1 million gift from Frank Jao and Chieu Le to fund a campus near Orange County’s Little Saigon neighborhood. Jao is the CEO of the Bridgecreek Group, a real estate development company. Le owns the Lee’s Sandwiches chain.
Marygrove College (Mich.) received a $15,000 grant from Bank One to provide remedial reading, writing and mathematics assistance for 7- to 12-year-old girls in Southwest Detroit. The Marygrove Kids’ College and Learning Clinic is partnering with the Mercy Education Project to provide the classes.
Mills College (Calif.) received a $5.9 million bequest from the estate of Eileen Mitchell Gibbs, a 1936 alumna of the college. The gift will fund technology, endowed professorships and endowments for the natural sciences building and the Haas Pavilion.
