In fall 1993, while discussing a program for Sunday morning service in our church in Oxford, Miss., a committee member, after looking at her calendar, stated that Sunday would not be a good day for the program because Ole Miss was playing a home football game that weekend. Having raised three children (a daughter and two sons) who are currently Division I student athletes (basketball), having been involved in sports practically all of my life, and having worked as an educator for the past twenty-five years, I have been intimately involved in the counseling and advising of student athletes and their parents — particularly African American students. I also have worked closely with coaches and athletic administrators at several institutions.

Clinton and leading collegiate and professional sports figures participated in a lively meeting and discussion, which was held at the University of Houston on April 14, 1998.
