Corey Thompson
The firing came hours before what was the program's home finale — a game carrying significant emotional weight for seniors, alumni, and the broader WSSU community. It is exceedingly rare for a head coach to be dismissed so close to tip-off, and the decision left players and staff to navigate both the emotional fallout and immediate competitive demands of a scheduled contest.
Thompson, who was hired in July 2024, compiled a 5-22 overall record in his first season and a 2-13 mark in CIAA play, with no road victories. This season, the Rams improved modestly to 7-15 overall and 2-11 in conference — still near the bottom of the CIAA standings. The back-to-back losing seasons appear to have been the decisive factor behind the administration's move.
The contrast within WSSU's athletic department is striking. While the men's program has struggled, the Lady Rams have enjoyed a historic season, posting a 21-2 record and earning a No. 18 national ranking in Division II — a program record.
With the CIAA Tournament approaching, the university now faces the task of identifying new leadership capable of recruiting talent, developing players, and restoring a winning culture to a program with a proud tradition.
