Talladega College Names New President

TALLADEGA, Ala.

Dr. Billy Hawkins, president of Texas College in Tyler, Texas, has been named president of Talladega College with plans to bolster enrollment and possibly restart the athletics program.

Hawkins, who has been president of Texas College for seven years, was picked by Talladega College’s governing board to take the reins on Jan. 1. He replaces Dr. Oscar Prater, who announced his retirement in May.

Hawkins told The Daily Home newspaper that he is looking forward to making some changes at Talladega College.

“I’m bringing in some new initiatives and programs that will move the college forward,” he said.

He said he wants to add some new academics and to look into restarting the school’s athletic program. He also said fundraising will top his list of priorities.
