College basketball generates millions of dollars every season. For the universities looking to play in the NCAA Tournament, affectionately known as the Big Dance, the man who leads their team can be the difference between sharing in the wealth or sitting on the shelf.
Black players make up approximately 70 percent of the rosters of the top teams. While the percentage of Black head basketball coaches is nowhere near that level, the Atlantic Coast Conference is making strides in promoting African Americans to top coaching positions.
The ACC is the only major conference with a majority of Black head coaches, with seven of the 12 men’s basketball teams led by Blacks.
