CLAUDIA MARROQUIN
CLAUDIA MARROQUIN has been appointed senior vice president and dean of admissions and financial aid at Bowdoin College. Most recently director of admissions, Marroquin joined the Bowdoin admissions staff in 2010 as assistant dean. Originally from Guatemala, Marroquin is a graduate of Bowdoin University and is pursuing a master’s in higher education at the Harvard University Graduate School of Education.

CHRISTINE JOHNSON MCPHAIL
CHRISTINE JOHNSON MCPHAIL has been named president of Saint Augustine’s University. She succeeds her husband, Irving Pressley McPhail, who died last fall as a result of COVID-19 complications. Most recently a professor of practice at the John E. Roueche Center for Community College Leadership at Kansas State University, McPhail holds a master’s from California State University and a doctorate in higher education administration from the University of Southern California.

Most recently deputy chief financial officer at Howard and previously assistant vice president and chief business officer at Georgetown University, Martinez holds a bachelor’s in business administration and an executive MBA from Georgetown University.

LAURIE CARTER has been appointed president of Lawrence University. She is the first person of color to hold the position in the school’s 174-year history. Currently president of Shippensburg University, Carter holds a bachelor’s in communications from Clarion University, a master’s in communications from William Paterson University and a law degree from Rutgers University.

LESLIE R. BOYD
LESLIE R. BOYD has been named director of the Division of Gynecologic Oncology at the Laura and Isaac Perlmutter Cancer Center and within the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at New York University (NYU) Langone Health. Boyd has worked at NYU since 2009 and is currently an associate professor of obstetrics and gynecology as well as director of the Gynecologic Oncology Fellowship Program. She holds her medical doctorate from Yale School of Medicine

Report: Employers Value Liberal Education
The Association of American Colleges and Universities (AAC&U) released “How College Contributes to Workforce Success: Employer Views on What Matters Most,” its seventh survey of executives and hiring managers. AAC&U found substantial support for the outcomes and experiences of a liberal education. Conducted in partnership with Hanover Research, the report examines the answers of 496 executives and hiring managers responsible for making hiring and promotion decisions at U.S. companies that range in size and industries.

My mom let me know that she recently purchased a walking stick for when she and my father walk our dog. While they are entering an older stage in their lives, they are still in good health and have no issues walking. They bought the walking stick for the sole purpose of having something to defend themselves with in the case they are attacked. Though she didn’t say it explicitly, she is afraid that she might also become a victim of anti-Asian violence.
