AUGUSTA, Maine With a balanced state budget still beyond lawmakers’ grasp, a community college student, an administrator, a business leader and legislators pleaded last week for more funding for the seven-campus system, saying the state is failing to address surging demand by prospective students.

Undocumented Students Urge Passage of DREAM ACT
WASHINGTON, DC Illegal immigrants told a sympathetic U.S. House panel on Friday what life is like for immigrants struggling to get a college education with the threat of deportation hanging over their heads. A bill before Congress, the DREAM ACT, offering a path to citizenship, is part of the immigration reform bill the U.S. Senate is set to vote on this week.

A recent study suggests new prison inmates are more educated than cohorts from a 1992 study, and more of their parents are college-educated. In fact, the literacy scores of Black and Hispanic inmates were higher than those of Black and Hispanic high school dropouts living in society.
