Ohio Governor Unveils Dual Enrollment Initiative

COLUMBUS, Ohio — Gov. Ted Strickland on Wednesday proposed a $1.7 billion economic stimulus package to revitalize the economy in the midst of a national slump. He also proposed a plan in his second State of the State speech that would allow eligible high school seniors to spend their last year in high school taking classes on an Ohio public college campus for free.

Clemson Conference Addresses Best Practices for Black Student Achievement

CLEMSON, S.C. There are no easy solutions to the challenges of creating a diverse student body in this anti- and post-affirmative action era. That was the general consensus at the sixth annual conference “Best Practices in Black Student Achievement,” which brought more than 200 academicians from all regions of the United States to Clemson University late week. But the value diversity brings enriches the college experience, they agreed.

Fisk Art Trial To Proceed Without Deal With Local Leaders

A Tennessee judge, citing Fisk University’s refusal to negotiate with a powerful group of Nashville business and political leaders on a local solution for keeping the priceless Stieglitz Collection of art at the school, ruled Wednesday a case over the school’s right to sell all or part of the collection can go to trial as planned February 19.

Study: Public HBCUs Are Not Funded Equitably Compared to Traditionally White Institutions

Public historically Black institutions are usually on the losing end when government dollars and permission to create graduate programs are being handed down, according to the new study, “Contemporary HBCUs: Considering Institutional Capacity and State Priorities.”

Holistic Admissions Review Not Being Utilized in California

Despite the official adoption of a holistic review of applicants to blunt the impact of the 1996 affirmative action ban in admissions, University of California schools are still relying on traditional indicators of merit and Black student enrollment has continued to suffer as a result, according to a UCLA study released Tuesday.
