As the pace of change continues to accelerate, higher education leaders are now under constant pressure to respond to social justice issues within their campuses and surrounding communities. To my generation, education is viewed as the “great equalizer,” but this promise of equality cannot be achieved when fundamental injustice exists.

The dream of free college for all recently took a big step forward. The College Promise campaign unveiled its proposal for joint support from both federal and state governments. This partnership, if enacted, could make public community and two-or four-year colleges and universities completely free for all qualifying students.

Stakeholders Call for Focus on Equity as Community Colleges Recover From COVID-19 Crisis
Last year colleges and universities were forced to temporarily close their doors as COVID-19 spread throughout the country. Virtual instruction became the norm as institutions worked to continue with classes while mitigating transmission risks, and meeting students’ basic needs became the focal point as food and housing insecurity were exacerbated by the pandemic. Finding affordable childcare also became a challenge for students working to learn with children at home.

California Community Colleges Chancellor Eloy Ortiz Oakley Is 2021 Diverse Champion
Growing up in Southeast Los Angeles as the son of a U.S. citizen father educated in Mexico and a mother who was a Mexican immigrant, Eloy Ortiz Oakley says that he could not have imagined a journey that would take him to leading the largest higher education system in the U.S. However, Oakley says that it is the very struggles he overcame in his youth that inform his work as chancellor of the California Community Colleges system, which comprises 116 colleges serving more than 2.1 million students.

Community College Enrollment Is Down 10%. Here’s How Schools Hope to Help Students Return
Data from the National Student Clearinghouse shows that community college enrollment in fall 2020 was down 10.6% from fall 2019 for full-time students and 9.9% for part-time students. The biggest declines were among African American males at 19.2% and Native American males at 20.1%.

Report Shows How COVID-19 Is Impacting the Community College Experience
On Thursday, the Center for Community College Student Engagement (the Center) at the University of Texas at Austin released “The Impact of COVID-19 on Entering Students in Community Colleges,” a report which spotlights the ongoing issues of students who have enrolled despite the obstacles caused by the pandemic. The survey was administered in fall 2020 to 5,193 entering students at 38 colleges around the country.
