Queer Latinx … Yep We’re Here
Today, as a Queer, college educated, person of color I carry marginalization in some university spaces, while holding the privilege of being a Ph.D. student in others. My privilege provides an opportunity to act as a visual to college students, staff and faculty towards these two points: that I was meant to be in this space and that my community will continue to be here after I am gone.

HSI Pathways Program Aims to Increase Hispanic Representation in the Professoriate
The goal of the HSI Pathways program is to increase the number of Latino faculty in the humanities. Funded by a five-year, $5.1 million grant from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, the program is on track to prepare 90 students from Florida International University, the University of Texas El Paso and California State University, Northridge – all Hispanic serving institutions (HSIs) – for careers in academia.

‘The Best Dissertation is a Finished Dissertation’ Reconsidered
Throughout my time as doctoral student, there is one piece of advice that I keep hearing that is both reassuring and troubling to me — “the best dissertation is a finished dissertation.” At face value, I interpret that as advice to not overthink every decision I make about my dissertation, to let go of trying to achieve perfection, and to do my best to get it done. While I agree with all of this, I can’t help but wonder “what does that say about the way we approach our work?”

Navigating Bias Incidents on Campus as an Administrator
During my tenure as an assistant dean of students, I was involved in a committee charged with responding to reported bias incidents on campus. When a member of the campus community experienced, witnessed or were aware of something that they believed to be bias, they could use an online form to report the incident anonymously. Once a week, this committee I was a part of would read over all the cases and decide how they should be handled.

On Leaving Home
My mother consistently asks, “When are you coming home?” which is usually followed by, “Do you just not want to come home?” For my mother, earning a Ph.D. meant that I would have the ability to return home because why else leave to attend graduate school.
