Partnership Receives Gates and Lumina Grants
The Partnership for Native American College Access and Success received $292,000 from the Gates Foundation and $195,000 from the Lumina Foundation to strengthen postsecondary curriculum for Native students and create a clear pathway to a bachelor’s degree for Native Americans in Muckleshoot and Tulalip communities, Evergreen State College announced.

Study Finds Minorities More Likely to be Paddled in School
Paddlings, swats, licks. A quarter of a million U.S. schoolchildren got them last year and blacks, American Indians and kids with disabilities got a disproportionate share of the punishment, according to a study by a human rights group.

The story, “Journalism Educators Association Aims to Step Up Diversity Efforts,” published online Aug. 11, 2008 contained factual errors that have since been corrected. The story should have said that Tony Atwater was the first African-American to lead AEJMC from 1992 to 1993. The Commission on the Status of Women, the Commission on the Status of Minorities and the Gay Lesbian Bisexual Transgender Interest Group were established several years earlier than reported.

Dr. William Banfield, a professor at the Berklee College of Music, says of Isaac Hayes: “At Stax, he became an artist and further defined and refined Black music and then represented Black music as kind of a musical prince of our culture at a critical time when Black music was very influential to the identity of our people.”
