Opinion: The Proposed NSF Broadening Participation Budget—A Lingering Odor
In congressional testimony, National Science Foundation (NSF) Director Arden Bement voiced support for the Obama administration’s 8-percent increase in the NSF FY 2011 budget to $7.42 billion. The words were earnest, but, for communities supported by the Education and Human Resources (EHR) Directorate, the increase smells of a skunk.

Tulane University Institute Finds Racial Divide Over Post-Katrina Public School Changes
In survey of New Orleans residents, the university’s Cowen Institute for Public Education Initiatives found that a higher percentage of White voters (80 percent) than Black voters (57 percent) believe the state made the right decision in taking over most public schools in the city.

Temple University Benefactor Donates Harriet Tubman Items to Smithsonian
Tourists will be able to see some rare, personal belongings of famed abolitionist Harriet Tubman when an African-American history museum opens on the National Mall. This week, historian Charles L. Blockson donated about 40 objects from Tubman’s life to the Smithsonian’s National Museum of African American History and Culture.
