VALERIE SMITH has been appointed president of Swarthmore College, effective July 1. She is currently dean of the college and a professor of literature and African-American studies at Princeton University. Smith earned a bachelorâs from Bates College, and a masterâs and a doctorate from the University of Virginia.

RANGITA DE SILVA DE ALWIS has been appointed associate dean of international affairs for the School of Law at the University of Pennsylvania. She was director of the Women in Public Service Project and the Global Womenâs Leadership Initiative at the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars. De Silva de Alwis earned a bachelorâs from the University of Colombo in Sri Lanka, and a masterâs and a doctorate from Harvard Law School.

She is currently the senior vice president for academic affairs at West Virginia University at Parkersburg.
