WASHINGTON The Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) and sporting goods giant Nike announced last month, that they have signed a historic, three-year agreement that will not only provide footwear and apparel for conference teams, but also will include summer internships for students at Nike headquarters.

Being honest about and to athletes

Having raised three children (a daughter and two sons) who are currently Division I student athletes (basketball), having been involved in sports practically all of my life, and having worked as an educator for the past twenty-five years, I have been intimately involved in the counseling and advising of student athletes and their parents — particularly African American students. I also have worked closely with coaches and athletic administrators at several institutions.

Sports provided the focus of President Bill Clinton’s second town hall meeting on race relations in America. Clinton and leading collegiate and professional sports figures participated in a lively meeting and discussion, which was held at the University of Houston on April 14, 1998. Slow motion penalty – lawsuit by National Women’s Law Center – related article on Title IX law – Despite Sluggish Progress, Four HBCUs Cited in Title IX Complaint

It is ironic that four historically Black colleges and universities are among the twenty-five institutions named in a Title IX complaint filed by the National Women’s Law Center. Ironic, because the prime mission of HBCUs is to provide educational opportunities to those who may not otherwise get the chance to attend college. The complaint was filed in June just weeks before the celebration of Title IX’s twenty-fifth anniversary.
