Portage Veteran Awarded Honorary Diploma After Dropping Out For Military Service

PORTAGE, MI — On Robert El Henicky’s 17th birthday on Dec. 1, 1960, he decided to drop out of high school and start a new adventure in military service.

El Henicky, 75, received permission from his parents to drop out and join the Air Force before turning 18. The original plan was to go to the Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio, Texas, the only entry processing station for Air Force enlisted Basic Military Training, with two of his best friends from high school.
