“Free Tuition” Plan Doesn’t Help Part-Timers

Michele Gawronski tried the traditional route to a college degree fresh out of Hamburg High School 28 years ago. It didn’t work.

She’s trying again now. The single mother of two teenage daughters takes night classes while working two jobs to make ends meet.

As a state income taxpayer, Gawronski will help fund recently adopted enhancements to financial aid programs in New York, including the new Excelsior Scholarships that promise free tuition to the state’s public colleges and universities.
