SCIENCE FUNDING IN THE AGE OF TRUMP: Donald Trump’s win has stoked university leaders’ perpetual anxiety over science funding, which they fear could now be firmly on the chopping block. Led by Rep. Lamar Smith, (R-Texas), the chairman of the House Science, Space and Technology Committee, Republicans have fought to pull back on federal funding for social sciences and climate and energy research. While the president-elect has said little about research funding, Trump’s campaign trail comments — such as repeatedly calling climate change a hoax — give university leaders little hope he’ll be an advocate for science funding.
