UNC Faculty Group Says Secrecy to Hurt New University Head

Faculty representatives for North Carolina’s public university system said Thursday the next president of the 17-campus University of North Carolina will take the job with extra baggage by failing to meet with teachers and researchers first.

EDWARD CHIU

EDWARD CHIU has been named senior vice president for advancement at Babson College. He was vice chancellor for university advancement at the University of Massachusetts Lowell. Chiu earned a bachelor’s and a master’s from the University of Connecticut.

COLLEEN SMITH

COLLEEN SMITH has been appointed president of Coconino Community College in Arizona, effective February 1. She is district senior vice president for academic affairs at Collin College in Texas. Smith earned a bachelor’s and a master’s from Texas A&M Commerce (formerly East Texas State University), and a doctorate from Texas Woman’s University.

TAMARA RODENBERG

TAMARA RODENBERG has been named president of Bethany College in West Virginia, effective January 1. She is vice president for advancement for the Divinity School at Texas Christian University. Rodenberg earned a bachelor’s from Texas Christian University, a master’s from Lexington Theological Seminary and a doctorate from the Graduate Theological Union in California.

NA’ILAH NASIR

NA’ILAH NASIR has been appointed vice chancellor for equity and inclusion at the University of California, Berkeley, effective November 1. She is associate dean of diversity for social sciences, a full professor in the School of Education and the Department of African American Studies, and holds the Birgeneau Chair in Educational Disparities and the Williams Chair of African American Studies at UC Berkeley. Nasir earned a bachelor’s from UC Berkeley and a doctorate from the University of California, Los Angeles.
