ACADEMIC
KARSTEN J.Y. CASH is the new director of the Black Culture Center
at the University of Missouri-Columbia. He comes to UMC from Eastern
Illinois University, where he was an academic advisor for the Gateway
Program. Cash earned a bachelor’s degree in African American Studies
from Wesleyan University (Conn.); and a master’s degree in social
justice education from the University of Massachusetts-Amherst.
DR. E. NEWTON JACKSON JR. has been appointed an assistant professor
in the sport administration program in the department of physical
education at Florida State University. Before this appointment, he was
on the faculty of Howard University and was the only African American
head coach of a swimming and diving team at the NCAA Division I level.
Jackson earned a bachelor’s degree from the University of the District
of Columbia; a master’s degree in sport administration from Grambling
State University; and a doctorate in sport administration from the
University of New Mexico.
JOAN JOHNSON has been named assistant professor of education at
Regent University in Virginia Beach, Va. Previously, she was an
assistant professor of education at the University of Evansville in
Indiana. Johnson earned a bachelor’s degree in psychology from James
Madison University (Va.); and a master’s degree in counseling education
from the University of Virginia.
E. TIMOTHY MOORE has been appointed the assistant dean in the
College of Arts and Sciences at Kent State University (Ohio). He has
served for 23 years as an associate professor in the department of Pan
African Studies. Moore earned a bachelor’s degree in fine arts, and a
master of arts and a master of fine arts, both in visual communication
design, and all from Kent State University.
ALAN MURRY is the new assistant admissions director at the
University of South Florida. Previously, he was the recruitment manager
at Oral Roberts University (Okla.). Murry earned a bachelor’s degree in
communications from the University of Science and Arts of Oklahoma.
LEROY SUMMERS, JR. has been named vice president for business and
fiscal affairs at Florida Memorial College in Miami. He previously
headed the division of business and finance at Savannah State
University in Georgia. Summers earned a bachelor’s degree in business
management and accounting from Shaw University (N.C.); and a master’s
degree in business administration from Morgan State University (Md.).
