Meharry President To Assume Presidency of Morehouse School of Medicine
NASHVILLE, Tenn.
Dr. John E. Maupin Jr., president of Meharry Medical College, will step down in July. Maupin, the first Meharry alumnus to hold the top office in the college, will take over the presidency of Morehouse University’s School of Medicine in Atlanta.
“I believe Meharry is well positioned to provide exceptional leadership in national efforts to advance scientific understanding of ethnic-based health disparities,” Maupin says. “I feel fortunate to have had the opportunity to lead my alma mater during what has been an exciting time of strategic growth.”
As the nation’s largest private, independent historically Black medical school, Meharry has been at the forefront of research into racial health disparities. Maupin came to the college in 1994, and has helped raise student scores on national qualifying examinations to the highest level in school history. He also guided the development of an innovative long-term partnership with the Metropolitan Nashville General Hospital and Vanderbilt University Medical Center.
Maupin now returns to Morehouse, where he was executive vice president and chief operating officer of the School of Medicine before coming to Meharry. His professional career has led him from Baltimore, where he was dental director of the West Baltimore Health Center before joining the Baltimore City Health Department. He later moved to Atlanta, spending two years as chief executive officer of Southside Healthcare Inc. before taking his position at Morehouse.
