Maricopa Community Colleges Chancellor Gonzales to Step Down in June

Dr. Steven GonzalesDr. Steven GonzalesDr. Steven R. Gonzales  will resign as chancellor of the Maricopa County Community College District in June to accept a leadership position in the education department at Kansas State University.

Gonzales, who officially became chancellor in fall 2022, has led the state's largest community college system for more than three years, including nearly three years in an interim capacity starting in January 2020.

During his 13-year tenure with Maricopa Community Colleges, Gonzales oversaw the implementation of the system's first bachelor's degree programs and other initiatives aimed at expanding access to higher education.

"I think our greatest accomplishment that I have had is building a culture where we've accepted it as our responsibility to advance this organization in spite of some of the challenges that we've experienced," Gonzales said.

The MCCCD governing board will launch a national search for Gonzales' replacement, he said.

The Maricopa County Community College District serves approximately 200,000 students annually across 10 colleges in the Phoenix metropolitan area.
