University of Michigan Restarts Presidential Search as Kent Syverud Steps Aside to Fight Brain Cancer

  • Kent Syverud, who was slated to become president of the University of Michigan in May, has announced he will no longer take the job following a diagnosis of brain cancer.
  • Syverud, an alumnus and former faculty member, will serve as a special advisor to the Board of Regents and a professor of law while he undergoes treatment.
  • The Board of Regents must now restart the search for a permanent leader; UM has been without a seated president for nearly a year following the departure of Santa Ono. The institution must now navigate a high-stakes search for the second time in a short period.

The bigger picture:

The timing is notable for higher education in the region. The vacancy comes shortly after the president of Ohio State — Michigan’s primary rival — resigned under different circumstances in March. Both of the Big Ten’s flagship institutions are now entering the summer of 2026 without permanent leadership, creating a rare and intense competition for the same pool of elite candidates.

Across the country, a growing number of candidates are withdrawing at the final stage of searches, citing the existential political and campus climate risks that now come with the job. Presidential turnover in 2025 increased by as much as 30% compared to prior years, affecting more than 100 institutions, including eight of 18 Big Ten institutions.

This convergence of localized rivalry and national instability suggests that the University of Michigan is no longer just searching for a president; it is competing in a depleted marketplace where the "ideal" candidate is increasingly wary of the cost of entry. As flagship institutions like Michigan and Ohio State vie for a shrinking pool of elite leaders, they must confront a sobering reality: the very political and regulatory pressures that make these roles so critical are the same factors driving top-tier talent to withdraw at the finish line.
