Tobacco Banned at MSU

EAST LANSING, Mich. — Michigan State University students, faculty and others who want to smoke cigarettes or use other tobacco products are going to have to do so off campus.

A ban on all tobacco products, including cigarettes, chewable tobacco, vaporizers, e-cigarettes and hookahs, went into effect August 15. It applies to university sites around the world and prohibits tobacco use in buildings, on lawns and sidewalks and in personal vehicles.

University officials say they’re enacting the ban as a matter of public health. Free tobacco cessation and nicotine cessation resources are being offered.

For Michigan State student smokers, punishments could range from a written warning to a suspension. Complaints against employees of the East Lansing school would go through human resources. Police plan to educate tobacco users initially about the ban.
