Drexel Team Awarded $12M Grant for Study

PHILADELPHIA — A research team at Drexel University in Philadelphia has been awarded a $12 million grant by a British foundation to examine the effects of urban life on the health of Latin Americans.

WCAU-TV reports Ana Diez Roux, dean of Drexel’s Dornsife School of Public Health, will head the team.

The study is one of four being funded by London-based nonprofit Wellcome Trust as part of its Our Plant, Our Health initiative.

Wellcome’s Dr. Sarah Molton says the initiative will bring together collaborators from all over the world to explore how we can create heath, not just prevent disease.

A release from Drexel states that Roux’s team will study “how the governance, design, organization and environment of Latin American cities affect population health, as well as health inequities within cities.”
