Bluefield State Told to Reinstate Fired Professor

BLUEFIELD, W.Va. — The West Virginia Education and State Employees Grievance Board last month ordered historically Black Bluefield State College to reinstate Garrett Olmsted as a tenured professor. Olmsted was fired after protesting the firing of the last Black faculty member and the fact that African American student enrollment had dropped under 8 percent. (See Black Issues, June 11)

Beyond the scholarly expectations, you must begin to acquire administrative experience in higher education as a way of demonstrating organizational leadership. The leadership position will provide opportunities for others beyond your department to see and appreciate your abilities. I would suggest that you also take some courses in higher education administration to provide a historical context, a theoretical framework, and an overview of the role of dean.
