On July 1, 2025, Dr. Gina S. Brown became the 12th and first female president of Oakwood University, a 130-year-old private historically Black university in Huntsville, Alabama. Her background is in nursing and her doctorate is in nursing education with a specialization in policy and ethics. Brown moved into academia after a career as a critical care nurse and hospital administrator. In her first three months as president, she led a fundraising campaign that garnered over $500,000, clearing 400 students to register for classes.
